The stock market, it is often said, climbs a wall of worry. Incredibly, the tremendous advance we've enjoyed in 2013, came amidst the backdrop of dysfunction in Washington and anxiety over Fed tapering, asserts John Buckingham in The Prudent Speculator.
We remain optimistic about the long-term prospects of our broadly-diversified portfolios of undervalued stocks, even as we concede that we are overdue for a pullback and we have a bit more cash than usual.
We have no newfound insight into near-term market moves just because our performance star is shining brighter, but we can say, from our contrarian viewpoint, that recent talk of a bubble in equities has been reassuring. Meanwhile, here's a look at two leading retailers.
Kohl's (KSS)
Kohl's operates family-oriented department stores offering moderately-priced apparel, footwear, accessories, and home goods.
Stores, which number 1,155 (more than a third are company-owned), are heavily-concentrated in the Midwest and East, but Kohl's is aggressively expanding into the South and West.

Is the stock looking cheap?
To me, Halliburton currently looks cheaper that its bigger cousin Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB ) . While Halliburton is trading at 21 times its earnings, and Schlumberger's trading at only 18 times earnings, the reason I'm not too interested in the P/E multiple is that Halliburton's bottom line doesn't reveal its actual profits. Since April 2010, the company has been making provisions for its part in the Macondo oil spill disaster. This has distorted Halliburton's actual earnings considerably. - [By Lee Jackson]
Schlumberger Ltd. (NYSE: SLB) revenue grew 8% year-over-year to $11.18 billion in the second quarter of 2013, fueled by high growth in its international segment. While the company does generate 11% of revenue in the Middle East and Asia, only a prolonged Syrian conflict is expected to dent their strong results. UBS has a $98 price target and the consensus figure is at $96. Stockholders are paid a 1.5% dividend.

We think KMB will be perceived as the safest of the multinationals. Its sales outside the US are about 55% of total; this compares to 65%-70% for Procter & Gamble (PG) and Coty (COTY) and 80%-90% for Colgate (CL), Avon and Tupperware (TUP). In general, its risk to the most volatile currencies is below average (its exposure to Eastern Europe is less than 2% of sales), though it is still translating results in Venezuela (about 3% of sales and profit) at the official rate of 6.3 VEF/$ (the parallel rate just hit 175 VEF/$) and Argentina (also 3% of sales) may devalue again. The cost of important raw materials has started to weaken; as they follow oil decline they could boost gross margins in 2H15. Of note, polypropylene and natural gas are off 17% 4Q-to-date; pulp prices, while not declining much, seem manageable.

Shares of Manitowoc have gained 33% so far in 2014, easily besting Caterpillar’s (CAT) 6.6% rise, Deere’s (DE) 3.1% drop, Joy Global’s (JOY) 3.1% fall and Terex’s (TEX) 2.3% advance.

Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT ) is taking the biggest hit on the Dow, crashing 3.1% today. The company relies on growth in emerging markets to grow sales, and China's GDP numbers will always affect the stock in the short term. A lot of this weakness is already priced into the stock, so it may not be bad for long-term investors. The company reports earnings next Monday, and estimates call for $1.44 per share in earnings, down from $2.37 a year ago.
