Best Construction Stocks To Invest In 2014

In this series, we'll explore the data announcements and events that may affect the performance of bank stocks during the upcoming week.

The past week has been an eventful one. With the recent news from the Federal Open Market Committee that there is a timeline for ending its current stimulus policy, the market took a nosedive -- and banks went right with it. With the coming week set to deliver more housing market news, the banks may stand a better chance at regaining some of the losses they sustained toward the end of this week. Let's take a look at what's in store for bank investors in the coming days.

Tuesday

FHFA Home Price Index: Using data from Fannie Mae (NASDAQOTCBB: FNMA  ) and Freddie Mac, this home-price index shows investors the current pricing information for conforming loans purchased by the two government-sponsored enterprises. This index can give bank investors a good idea of how prices are rising and the number of new conforming loans.
New home sales: Last week we saw a 4.2% increase in existing-home sales from April to May. The new-home sales information will give a good reference to whether buyers are taking advantage of lower-priced existing homes and whether new construction is keeping pace with buyer demand. Bank investors will also be able to see how much new mortgage business has been able to walk through the banks' doors. Case-Shiller Price Index: We've been seeing home prices rise as demand beings to outpace current inventory. Though some have considered the rising prices to be a signal for trouble, this new rise may benefit banks by creating higher loan balances from which to generate interest income. Since some banks (NYSE: WFC  ) have noted a decrease in refinancing activity, the rising prices for new mortgages in the still-low interest-rate environment may help offset some of the lower volume in new-loan origination.

After the bedroom, the kitchen is probably the place where we spend the most time awake in our homes with small cap kitchen stocks Caesarstone Sdot-Yam Ltd (NASDAQ: CSTE) and American Woodmark Corporation (NASDAQ: AMWD) along with diversified midcap Fortune Brands Home & Security Inc (NYSE: FBHS) all putting in a good performance. After all, any sort of housing recovery with more new homes being sold willhelp kitchen stocks and so will increased sales of older or foreclosed homes that need to have their kitchens remodeled. But which is the better kitchen stock for investors? Here iscloser look at all three:

I normally don't look at charts much, but comparing Orange to its competitors in the French telecommunications market is quite fascinating. As one can see, incumbents Bouygues (BOUYF.PK) and Vivendi (VIVHY.PK) (owner of SFR) saw similar price declines. The market, on the other hand, rapidly bid up the price of new entrant Iliad SA (ILIAF.PK), as a result of forecasts for Iliad to capture significant mobile market share (which it did, around 10%). The wide divergence in price relative to changes in underlying value favor going long the incumbents, including Orange. Because this time it's different.

CES Synergies Inc. (OTCBB:CESX) isn't a name you hear too often when discussing what's ahead for big engineering and construction firms like Dycom Industries, Inc. (NYSE:DY) or Fluor Corporation (NYSE:FLR). But, maybe it should be. What's good for the goose is also good for the gander, so to speak, and some good news for FLR and DY posted recently bodes just as well - maybe even better - for owners of CESX.

Nigeria reformed banking system has provided many foreigners with an attractive means to invest in the fast-growing domestic economy. The banking industry is important, not only because of the rise of microfinance, but because of the move by banks into consumer banking. Until recently, banks were mainly financing large businesses or the government through bond purchases. Following a banking crisis in 2008, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) conducted an audit of the commercial banking sector. All banks that failed the audit had their CEOs replaced. The state-owned Asset Management Corporation (AMCON) was created to purchase non-performing loans and recapitalize the unhealthy banks. A recent review of the country banks by the IMF showed a dramatic increase in profits for the industry in 2012, while the capital adequacy ratio was above the minimum requirement of 10% and non-performing loans were below the mandated threshold of 5%5.
