LONDON -- The FTSE 100 has risen by 25% over the last year, and many top shares are beginning to look quite expensive. I'm on the hunt for companies that still look cheap, based on their long-term earnings potential. To help me hunt down these bargains, I'm using a special version of the price-to-earnings ratio called the PE10, which is one of my favorite tools for value investing.
The PE10 compares the current share price with average earnings per share for the last 10 years. This lets you see whether a company looks cheap compared to its long-term earnings.
Today, I'm going to take a look at the PE10 of drinks giant Diageo (LSE: DGE ) (NYSE: DEO ) .
Is Diageo a buy?
Diageo has been one of the great big-cap growth stories of the last 10 years. Since 2003, its share price has grown by 179%, and its dividend has increased by 69%, giving the firm an army of loyal shareholders.
However, I'm concerned that the company's share price might have got slightly ahead of its earnings growth. Does the firm's PE10 suggest underlying value, or is Diageo ripe for rerating?

On the flip side, the iPIG portfolio initially passed on Emerson Electric (NYSE: EMR ) , in spite of its great business and dividend history, because its stock price was above the portfolio's buy-below valuation. Yet when the market later offered up Emerson at a lower, more reasonable price tag, the portfolio snapped up shares.

In the investing world, boring businesses don't get much attention. The financial media obsesses over the next hot stock, preferring to ignore the seemingly sleepy companies that generate reliable profits year after year. Some of the high-quality companies that fly under the radar are pure industrials, such as Emerson Electric (NYSE: EMR ) , Dover (NYSE: DOV ) , and Illinois Tool Works (NYSE: ITW ) .

Monro Muffler Brake (MNRO) is a popular name in the DIFM & Services segment, while Pep Boys - Manny, Moe & Jack (PBY) is a hybrid of DIFM-DIY. The present perspective seems bright for such aftermarket service providers. However, these two are entirely different from aftermarket retailers such as Advance Auto Parts (AAP). Let us take a look at the present aftermarket scenario and its prospects.

Some individual stocks certainly did this week. Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) rose 19% to $509.74–a new all-time closing high–despite missing earnings forecasts. Strong same-store sales will do that. Baker Hughes (BHI), meanwhile, gained 11% to $55.55 after the oil-services company reported far stronger earnings than analysts had expected thanks to its business in the Middle East and Asia Pacific. Advance Auto Parts (AAP) gained 20% after purchasing a competitor and making itself the largest auto-parts supplier by revenue.

Shares of AutoZone have fallen 1.7% to $531.87 at 11:52 a.m., while Advance Auto Part (AAP) has dropped 1.6% to $121.27 and O’Reilly Automotive (ORLY) has declined 0.9% to $147.25. Pep Boys (PBY), however, has bucked the selling–its shares have gained 1.9% to $10.57.

What's interesting, though, is that historically, auto-parts makers are seen as relying on the lack of success among automakers. After all, new cars don't need parts nearly as often as older cars do, and when Ford and GM perform well, their customers don't have to rely as much on Genuine Parts or competitors AutoZone (NYSE: AZO ) and Advance Auto Parts (NYSE: AAP ) for replacements. Yet, even though Advance's 15% gain, and AutoZone's 20% rise year to date, aren't quite as substantial as Genuine Parts, they still signal a paradigm shift in the way investors look at the industry, perhaps recognizing that for every new car sold, there's usually a used car that gets traded in, and so good news for Ford and GM sales might actually translate into more business for the parts industry.
